We went up the nature trail about as far as the lowest snow field. We would have gone higher but it was a warm day and we didn't have any water with us.

Another "just to prove we were really there" photo. The mountain in the background is Mt. Juneau, I believe. We were up on the nature trail above the Mt. Roberts tramway.

The Gastineau Channel looking the other way. Across the channel is Douglass, which used to be another town until it combined with Juneau. They're connected by a bridge which is visible near the center of the picture. The cruise ship (not ours) had to anchor out there because the dock is only big enough for three ships at a time, so they had to tender. There was one other ship running tenders as well; not sure why we were one of the privileged three, but since tenders are a pain, I'm glad we didn't have to here.

Bear-proof garbage can in Juneau. They apparently do have problems with bears coming into town sometimes.

This depicts the Eagle and the Raven, the two major moieties (clans) of the Tlingit people. Everyone belongs to one or the other, and they can't marry within their own clans -- Eagles have to marry Ravens and vice versa. It's matrilineal, so you belong to whichever one your mother is.

Ketchikan may have the most totem poles, but Juneau has some too. Apparently when the Christians came, they thought the natives worshiped the poles and tried to have them destroyed, but in reality they were a way of passing on histories in a culture that had no written language.
